Every year, in mid-March, in celebration of St. Patrick's Day, the waters of the Chicago river are painted in true Irish color: green.
Thousands of citizens come to see it is quite a beautiful sight. Looks particularly good when motor boats or boys water ski cut emerald water.
This year the river was painted on the 13th of March, and the idea occurred to Stephen Bailey, in December distant 1961. Bailey was the commercial Director of the Chicago Union Plumbers. He called his friend, Dan Lydon, to discuss plans for the parade 1962-th year. And here in the midst of their conversation, the Secretary reported that the Director wants to see one of the plumbers. Bailey was always proud of the fact that the door to his office was open for those who needed him, and he invited the worker to himself. The first thing that caught the audience's eyes, when the plumber came, there were green spots on its white form.
"Where have you been? "asked Bailey. The plumber told him I was trying to find and disable the line of the sewer, which flows into the Chicago river. This year the city began to provide control of water pollution and the buildings on the banks have been ordered to stop discharge of waste into the river.
In order to find the source of contamination plumbers poured green paint in tubes, and then checked whether there will be a green color in the river. Face Bailey brightened, and a smile touched his lips.
"We can use it! Why not paint the whole river on St. Patrick's Day? "- Dan leydon not believe his ears, and his first thought was "that's impossible, but knowing Bailey, he decided that you can try.
When the plumber left, Bailey continued: "I'm serious. Who can know this? ".
"Captain Manley, Director of the port. He is the only one I know who is responsible for all issues related to the Chicago river"
A second later, Bailey was already calling at the port. "Say, John, is it possible to add green dye into the river on St. Patrick's Day? ".
"You can try. Just a moment," manly asked this question to his Deputy - bill Barry.
"Oh, Cap, I don't know... If the fire Department can shoot the colored water into the air from their boats, I don't see why we can't do the same".
Manly returned to the phone and said that they should be able to crank it: "I will speak with your people and with fire"
The only problem was that no one could say how much dye to add to the river. Chicago was the first city that decided to try to do it. How much do I need? A couple of handfuls or a car?
One hundred pounds of dye was used in the first year and the river remained green for a week! For the second time in 1963 used 50 pounds, and the color lasted 3 days. In the end, came to a rate of 25 pounds, which was dissolved during the day. But in 1966, environmentalists raised the alarm, and Bailey had to find a new, more eco-friendly dye. And he found, however, again had to increase the dose to 40 lb.
The color of the river is an expensive lesson. However, the money for this no one selects, people do collect the necessary funds. The last few years on "greening" are Michael Butler and his team.
And another interesting miracle: dye before getting into the river has a reddish-orange color, but with the help of chemical reactions and magic becomes green.
