Grapefruit juice inhibits the effect of anticancer drugs

Grapefruit juice inhibits the effect of anticancer drugsScientists: Grapefruit juice increased the activity of drugs against cancer 3 times. This allowed doctors to reduce the toxic dose of the drug and to avoid unpleasant side effects, say scientists in a paper published in the journal Clinical Cancer Research.

"Grapefruit juice and drugs that act in a similar manner, can significantly increase the concentration of many drugs in the patient's blood. For a long time, this phenomenon was considered as a possible cause of overdose. We decided to test, improve and whether juice efficiency and bioavailability of sirolimus (anticancer drugs)," said the head of a medical team Ezra Cohen from the Medical center at the University of Chicago (USA).

As explained by the authors, the main obstacle to the use of this drug served as side effects. According to them, regularly receiving the optimal dose of sirolimus - 90 milligrams per week - causes nausea and loose stools in patients. Therefore, all clinical trials of this substance were limited to a dose of 45 mg per week.
