Traditionally, the festival de Cannes will begin with a presentation of the palm branches "for contribution to the development of cinema", which this year will receive Director Bernardo Bertolucci. Upon completion of the official part the audience will be able to see the woody Allen movie "Midnight in Paris", the main role played by Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, wife of French President.

Interestingly, the opening of the first international film festival in Cannes was planned for 1 September 1939, however, on this day began the second world war. The opening was delayed, and the first Cannes film festival was held only in September 1946.
