2012: countdown


Due to end in 2012, the famous Mayan calendar Honduras begins a series of events dedicated to the beginning of a new period of time. In the era of the Maya in this Central American state was a major center of culture of the Indians.


Place of performance will be the ancient city of Copan, located in the West of Honduras, namely its archaeological center. The programme is scheduled Wednesday, December 21 - the day before the end of the chronology of the Indians will remain exactly one year. In the view will be the President of Honduras, Porfirio Lobo, members of the government and scientists. Colorful event will be broadcast live by television of the Republic.





2012: countdownCelebrations will continue in Honduras and in the next year, the organizers hope that they will attract thousands of tourists. In Copan will be performances by folk groups, scientific conferences, exhibitions. According to the organizers, special interest among the visitors of the archaeological complex will cause planned there opening for an overview of the new public monuments of ancient civilization. Events dedicated to the upcoming end of the Mayan calendar, is also planned in Mexico and in Guatemala, where the preserved monuments of ancient civilization.
According to scientists, a major Maya center in Honduras occurred at the turn of our era, however, several centuries later was abandoned and almost completely obscured by the earth and wild vegetation. Ancient city discovered in 1839, the ruins of the city widely known for its ancient buildings, stelae, many unique designs thread. In 1981, UNESCO included Copan in the list of cultural heritage of humanity.




As it was written in the Days.Roux, despite popular opinion that the Mayans supposedly predicted the 2012 end of the world, according to scientists, the Mayan calendar does not end in December next year, and only begins counting from zero". The Mayan astronomers assumed that a new stage of civilization begins every 5125 years. The last of them began August 11, 3114 years before Christ. After today, the 13th "Baktun", according to the Maya, will begin a new period of time in the same cycles.
