There are several versions of the origin of mayonnaise. The most reliable evidence that the whole process took place in the French town of Mahon in 1756, when the English occupied the French land during the Seven years war (1756-1763).
In the French forces of Marshal Louis françois Armand du Plessis, Duke of Richelieu, was there a big problem with the supply of products - just vegetable oil, eggs and lemons. Because daily omelettes have already bored, Duke of Richelieu ordered the cook to cook from existing products any unusual dish.
Cook, unable to get any additional products, decided to cook the sauce from vegetable oil. The sauce, resulting in extremely tasty, liked the French military. And was named "mayonnaise" - French mayonnaise on", i.e. "moonskin", as the French spelling of the name of the city where it all happened, Mahon - "Mahon". It happened on may 28, 1756.
