Before you go
Make sure that you are familiar with your camera: you know what key to press to take a picture, how to turn the flash on, how to change ISO and so on. If you haven't read the manual for your camera, do it. Sometimes the owner is unaware of the capabilities of its equipment until you have read the documentation.
If you still have no case or camera bag (case), get this. Try to be modest, inconspicuous thing. Not so, which reads: "I'm a lot of money, and the camera inside is even more expensive! Steal me, and you will have happiness! ". The bag is very useful in the journey, because it, firstly, it protects the camera, and secondly, it frees your hands.
Packing, be sure to bring instruction to the camera, extra batteries and charger. If you are not sure that during your stay you will have the opportunity to be near the computer and copy the images to the media, make sure to reserve memory cards or special devices to store photos (such devices are called stock photography, one of them can be read here).
Camera settings
Settings your camera is controlled by the f-stop scale value of the aperture), shutter speed and ISO. F-stop determines how blurred the background in pictures. The lower the number, the more blurred the background more than it is, the sharper and clearer will be part of the background. You cannot tell what number it is better to install. It all depends on the effect you want to get in the picture.
Setting the shutter speed determines how fast your camera's shutter opens and closes. Than the speed faster, the more likely is the process of photographing the object. Note that if you put it below 60, then you will probably need a tripod, otherwise the hand shake will affect the picture and it will be blurred.
It is possible that your camera does not allow yourself to do some settings. But understanding what they do will help you to improve the look of the future picture. Making preliminary shots with different settings, you will better understand what they do.
Some cameras have an automatic mode in which the user can set to either f-stop or shutter speed. And the camera chooses the second characteristic. This in most cases is the ideal solution.
ISO determines how much light is needed to obtain the image. Smaller numbers (80-100) work for bright daylight, higher - for cloudy weather, the sunset lighting or shooting indoors. Read more about this you can read in our article "What is ISO".
Composition and subject
The number 1 tool that will help make your pictures more interesting, it's a good song. In the instructions for the cameras usually recommend to remove so that the object was in the center of the frame. This recommendation is based on the fact that in the viewfinders of some camera models you can see more than will fit in the frame. But it can not always follow.
Imagine three evenly spaced lines that divide your frame horizontally and three vertically. The point of intersection of these lines and have the most advantageous locations for placement of the subject. This rule is called the rule of thirds.
Do not try to draw on the viewfinder such strips and place objects strictly at the specified positions. Just experiment with positions not in the center of the frame and different angles.
A good practice would be to capture in the frame a little more space than you expect. Because when you print pictures part may be cut off due to the size of the format you chose, and the resolution at which you shot. If you own a photo editing software (Photoshop or other), then you can at home to cast photos to the specified print format by cutting fragments which does not fit (this is called the crop, from the English. crop - cut). In this case, you will be insured from "pleasant" surprises on the prints: hands, hair and other important parts would be saved, and to cut you a background or irrelevant details.
If you are going to shoot landscapes, then be prepared for one unpleasant moment: beautiful views of the pictures may look flat. In this case, it would be good to have some object in the foreground. For example, if you shoot a mountain lake, it would be good to catch in the frame and a fishing boat floating on the water surface. It will show how majestic and high surrounding mountains and make the shot more interesting. Learn more about shooting landscapes read our article "beginners Guide: landscapes and composition".
Do not be afraid of platitudes. There is nothing wrong with that you take off of friends or relatives on the background of the famous sights and monuments. The fact is that it (and not the macrophotography dragonflies) will then you a good memory about past vacations. Can try to make the shots more interesting by improving the composition or removing when your friends don't know about it.
Photographing local people, remember that not all love it. Sometimes people are annoyed by the camera aimed at them. In this case it is not necessary to settle and to do it against their will. Opportunities for interesting photo will last forever. A little practice - and your pictures look like postcards.
