Today will be the Nobel prize

Today, 10 December, will be one of the key events in the social and intellectual life of Sweden and Norway - Nobel day. This ceremony one of the most prestigious international awards - the Nobel prize, which is held annually.


It is awarded for outstanding scientific research, a breakthrough invention and a major contribution to culture and society development and enjoys an international reputation as the most honorable civilian honors. Its founder was Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist, engineer and inventor, on account of which 355 inventions (the most famous among them is dynamite).




During his life, Nobel amassed an impressive status (a large part of it was just due to the implementation of their own inventions), the bulk of which he bequeathed to the establishment of an international prize. By the way, the latest version of its famous wills Nobel signed almost a year before his death, November 27, 1895. The result of this Covenant was the organization of the Nobel Foundation. Today, for the award of Nobel prizes in all branches of science and culture meet Swedish organization. The exception is the Nobel peace prize - who to award this award, solves the Norwegian Nobel Committee.




There are several interesting points governing the selection of winners. So, the Nobel prize can be awarded only to individuals, not institutions (except again peace Prize - it can be awarded to both individuals and organizations). In one category the Nobel prize can be awarded two works. This rule was introduced only in 1968, de facto respected always. Cash reward when this is divided equally between the first works, and then equally between their authors.




The Nobel prize cannot be awarded posthumously. But if the claimant was alive at the time of announcement of the awarding of the prize to him (in October) and died before the ceremony (10 December), the bonus for him is preserved.




Prize may not be awarded to anyone, if members of the relevant Committee chose not worthy of works presented for the competition. In this case, the prize money is saved until next year. If the prize is not awarded, they are transferred to the private reserve of the Nobel Foundation. In turn, the winners received the award should speak with the so-called "Nobel memorial lecture", which is then published by the Nobel Foundation in a special volume. The procedure of awarding the nominees precedes the great work being done all year round numerous organizations around the world.




The final selection of the winners of the conduct of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Swedish Academy, the Nobel Assembly of the Karolinska Institute and the Norwegian Nobel Committee. This usually happens in October. And on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel (10 December 1896), winners of the award in the capitals of the two countries. In Stockholm, the king of Sweden presented the prize winner in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and Economics. In Oslo, in the city hall in the presence of the king of Norway and members of the Royal family, the Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prize in the field of protection of the world.




Along with a cash prize, the amount of which varies depending on the income of the Nobel Foundation, the laureates receive a gold medal with the image of the Nobel and diploma. Nobel prizes have great international prestige and, in addition, have the winners of substantial economic support. Besides the awards ceremony celebrations, this event will include two important components : the Nobel dinner and Nobel concert.
